DRAMATIC FINISH TO SUPER SENIORS INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT SEES ENGLISHMAN CAWTE CROWNED MASTERS CHAMPION
In what was the tightest of possible finishes, Selsey’s Malcolm Cawte became the 2026 Scottish Seniors International Masters champion at Monfieth Links.
Playing in the last group, the two-handicapper won on countback from playing partner Nigel Chesters, Hawkstone Park, after they finished tied on a gross aggregate of 218 for the 54-hole tournament.
And in a dramatic twist Chesters suffered a two-shot penalty after teeing off from the wrong tee at the 10th hole. The error cost him a seven and meant he was one shot more on the back nine than Cawte and therefore denying him the chance of victory.
Both players shot 75 in the third round as did Laurie Chancellor, Inverness, who finished just one shot behind the leading two with earlier rounds of 76 and 68.
Chesters and Cawte had jointly led the 120-strong field after Day Two with rounds of 75 and 68, and 71 and 72 respectively. So the finale could not have been any closer.
The trophy for the leading handicap player was presented to Prestonfield’s Alistair Dun (8.8) who won by four clear shots from Rossendale’s Nigel Clowes (6.3). Dun’s net scores were 68, 67 and 71.
Ian White, Lundin Links, finished third with rounds of 74, 70 and 68.
The tournament was hailed a resounding success, with more than a third of the field from south of the border.
Special congratulations to Ian Randall, Silverknowes, who holed in one at the par three fifth hole on his way to a closing round of 73.
Presenting the prizes, SSGS Chairman Alan Michie (who finished a creditable eighth in the gross tournament with rounds of 75, 76 and 73) thanked all competitors for making the tournament a great success. The International Masters was, he said, now regarded widely as the blue riband of international stroke-play tournaments for golfers aged 65 and over.
He thanked all at Monifieth Links for hosting the tournament, particularly Jan and Sarah in Trust administration, Ross Warwick and Rob Pedersen for acting as starters, and the green-staff for their excellent presentation of the course. He was also grateful to Monifieth Golf Club as host club for the event, with particular mention of Sandy and Linda Thomson and their catering staff for their excellent hospitality and service, and SSGS member Alan White for helping the scorers.
Mr Michie paid special tribute to the Society's competitions secretary, Ian Kerr and his volunteers, without whom, he said, tournaments such as the International Masters would simply not go ahead.
In his victory speech, Malcolm Cawte - who has competed in the tournament over the past three years - said the International Masters was always the event that was top of his list ‘because you always play on magnificent courses and this one has been the best of the lot’.

Autumn Meeting: 21 August, 2026
MOULTRIE MAKES IT A DOUBLE WITH SUB-PAR SUCCESS ON ROYAL DEESIDE
Scottish internationalist Paul Moultrie carded a second consecutive sub-par round to take the gold medal in the Autumn Meeting at Ballater, the final main tour stroke-play event of the year.
His scores of 69 and 68 secured him a two-shot victory over first round leader Maurice Lindsay, Grange & Broughty, who shot 71, three more than his opening 68.
Three players in the 94-strong field finished on 140 - Keith Watt, Turnhouse (72, 68), Scott Barlass, Bearsden (70, 70), and Paul Brookes, Braehead (70, 70).
Moultrie was a model of consistency, firing birdies at the 1st, 7th and 8th. The only blemish on his card was a bogey at the difficult par four 4th.
It was the Royal Troon player’s second SSGS success of the season, having also won the Central Scotland crown at Renfrew.
Moultrie’s victory at Ballater promises to deliver an exciting finale to the season at the Scottish Senior Matchplay Championships.
His fellow Royal Troon member and internationalist, Robert Jenkins, are on exactly the same number of Order of Merit points going into the last tournament of the season, the Scottish Seniors Match-Play Championship, which takes place at Glasgow Golf Club on September 9-11.
In the Autumn Meeting handicap competition, Scott Barlass (3.7) romped to a five shot victory with two net scores of 67. Local player Tony Evans finished runner-up (70, 69). Three players finished on 140 - Stirling’s Mike Hall (3.3), Braehead’s Paul Brookes (0.5) and Alloa’s Tony Stafford (4.4) with the latter taking third place by virtue of the better second round (73, 67).
Competitors were fulsome in their praise for the course, and the Society would like to express its sincere thanks to all at Ballater Golf Club for hosting the event. DEBUTANT COLIN HOLDS HIS NERVE TO CLINCH NORTH OF SCOTLAND CROWN
Colin Mundie, playing his first year on the Scottish Seniors circuit, finished on a three-under par aggregate of 139 to win the 36-hole North of Scotland Championship at Moray.
The Glenbervie player followed his opening round 69 with a one-under par 70 to clinch the gold medal by a single shot from Gullane’s Scott Walker and Grange & Broughty’s Maurice Lindsay, both of whom shot 71 following opening rounds of 69.
Walker claimed the runner-up spot from Lindsay by virtue of a better back nine in the second round.
Mundie, the only player in the 124-strong field to shoot under par in both rounds, started his second round in full control, with nine straight pars on the outward half.
He birdied the 10th before faltering with back-to-back bogeys on the 13th and 14th. But he managed to steady the ship, producing two further birdies at the 15th and 17th to secure the narrow victory.
It was a tournament played in wildly contrasting weather conditions. The first round was contested in temperatures reaching 26C with virtually flat calm. But Day 2 began with heavy rain and blustery winds, causing a half hour delay while green-staff battled to make the course playable.
It meant the early starters on Day 2 faced the toughest of conditions, while those teeing off later enjoyed fine, warm weather.
In the handicap section, Kilmarnock Barassie player Mark Gallagher (6.6) came home with net scores of 63 and 68 to win by two shots from Colin Mundie and three shots from Weston Main, Ballater.
David Campbell, Ratho Park, was one further shot adrift but had cause for celebration thanks to a hole-in-one at the 180-yard 15th.
Congratulations also to Robin Cockburn, Gullane, who aced the 146-yard sixth.
Players were full of praise for the condition of the Moray Old course and widely lauded Lossiemouth as one of the best venues on the circuit.

Royal Dornoch’s Allan Cameron shot a second round two-under par 69 to secure the gold medal at the West of Scotland Seniors Championship at Erskine.
The +2 player bagged no fewer than five birdies on Day 2 to clinch victory by one shot over David Cardwell. The Hamilton players couldn’t match his first round 70, faltering towards the end of his second round to finish with 73.
Cameron was one of only two players to tackle the tricky Erskine course in under par in the second round, the other being Scottish internationalist Derek Paton, Dunnikier Park, who also completed the second eighteen in 69.
Royal Troon’s Robert Jenkins finished third with rounds of 73 and 71.
Overnight leader Willie Macmillan, Bonnyton, couldn’t maintain his first round form which delivered an unrivalled 69, slipping in Round 2 to a disappointing 79.
Once again the high quality of the field was in clear evidence with plus handicap players commanding the top 10 places.
In the handicap section, top honours went to Alistair Rae (2.1), St Andrews, with net scores of 73, 72. Allan Cameron (+2.0) was runner-up on 75, 71; and Brian Doherty (0.0) Cardross, taking third spot with two net scores of 73.
The 117-strong field faced some challenging conditions over the two days of competition with spells of heavy showers, gusting winds and treacherous pin positions.

South of Scotland Open: July 16, 17
WATT TAMES SUN-SOAKED AND FIERY STRANRAER TO SECURE SOUTH OF SCOTLAND CROWN
A two-under par aggregate of 138 secured an impressive five-shot victory for Turnhouse player Keith Watt in the South of Scotland Championship at Stranraer.
The +1 handicapper followed an opening three-under par 67 with a 71 to capture the trophy on a course baked hard by the sun and made all the more challenging with some extremely tricky pin positions.
Watt’s first round comprised five birdies, blunted only by bogeys at the tough 16th and 17th.
In the second round, played in tougher conditions due to a strengthening wind, three bogeys at the fourth, sixth and ninth were offset by birdies at the seventh and eighth. On the inward nine, birdies at the 10th and 14th were given back with a double bogey on the 462-yard 17th when his approach found a bunker and he took two to get out.
But overall it was a magnificent performance, punctuated by the fact that he was the only player in the 80-strong field to finish under par. His nett scores were also good enough to secure top spot in the handicap section.
Scottish internationalist Derek Paton, Dunnikier Park, was scratch runner-up with an opening round of 73 which he followed with a 70, despite bogeying the last three holes.
Cochrane Castle’s Alan Kelly finished on the same aggregate but had to be content with third place due to Derek’s better second round. But his nett scores were good enough to claim runner-up place, while Ladybank’s Greg Mackie (1) was third on 142, three shots adrift.
Both rounds were played in warm sunshine and extremely fiery conditions.
The course was presented in excellent condition and the Society is grateful to all at Stranraer Golf Club for hosting the tournament, including the greenstaff, catering team and general manager Stephen Macauley
FRASER KEEPS HIS COOL IN THE HEAT OF LOCHMABEN TO WIN SANDY PIRIE TROPHY
John Fraser battled through temperatures reaching 32 degrees Centigrade at sun-drenched Lochmaben to secure his second consecutive Super Seniors trophy of the season.
Rounds of 69 and 74 gave the Royal Burgess member a two-shot victory over local member David Dickson who followed a first round 73 with a 72 on the second day.
Fraser was the only player in the 70-strong field to record a sub-par round during two days of intense heat at the Dumfries-shire course which was universally praised for its immaculate condition.
Former Lochmaben club champion Ian Brotherston was third with scores of 76 and 75.
Virtually every player found it difficult to cope with the heat, many of them wilting on the much tougher back nine.
But hats off to Kilmarnock Barrasie’s Bill Wardrope whose gross 71 was the lowest score recorded on Day 2, all the more remarkable by the fact that he did not wilt on the back nine, coming home in two-under par 35. The eight-handicapper was 13 shots better than his opening round and his aggregate was enough to secure the top handicap slot by four shots from David Dickson.
Alan Shearer, Forest Park Golf Club, was third in the handicap section on 142.

MOULTRIE EARNS SECOND CENTRAL SCOTLAND CROWN WITH SIX BIRDIE BONANZA
Royal Troon’s Paul Moultrie shot a second round 68 to clinch victory at the Central Scotland Seniors Championship at Renfrew.
His three-under par score was enough to secure the gold medal ahead of local player Gordon Coster who finished on the same 142 total but lost out due to Moultrie’s better second round.
After an opening round of 74, Moultrie completed his second round outward half with five birdies and no dropped shots. A further birdie at the par five 15th helped soften the blow of bogeys at the 11th and 13th.
It was the Scottish internationalist’s second victory in the Central Scotland Championship. His previous win was in 2019 at Stirling where he jointly holds the course record of 63, shot during the 2022 Scottish Seniors Open Championship.
Coster had jointly led with West Lothian’s Michael Wilson, both of whom shot one-under par 70s in the opening round in which the 114-strong field faced strong crosswinds and some challenging pin positions.
Heavy bursts of rain punctuated the second round in which Coster was only one over the card. Wilson couldn’t emulate his first round performance and slipped to 79.
Three-times Scottish Matchplay champion John Mathers finished third with rounds of 73 and 70.
In the handicap section, Coster (3) won by six shots from Stephen Forbes (4), Haggs Castle, with Robbie Allan (1), Lanark, and John Laurie (scratch), Glasgow, in joint third place on 144.

NIAL NAILS IT TO WIN PRESIDENT’S CUP - CLARK TAKES VICE-PRESIDENT'S CUP
Tantallon’s Nial Gemmell shot a remarkable second round of 67 to win the President’s Cup at a rainy and windswept Scotscraig.
His four under par score saw him clinch victory by virtue of a better second round than Steven Armstrong, Turnhouse, who finished with the same 140 total.
Gemmell had opened his account with a two-over par 73, but defied winds gusting to 40 mph on Day Two, posting five birdies and only one bogey over the 36-hole tournament.
Meanwhile Armstrong matched his first round 70 on Day 2 to claim the runner-up spot.
Ronnie Clark, Erskine, the 2022 President’s Cup champion, finished third with rounds of 71 and 70 which meant he won the Vice-President’s Cup for competitors over the age of 65.
Overnight leaders Neville Johnstone, Powfoot, and Gordon Taylor, Glenearn, couldn’t match their opening 69s, slipping to 77 and 81 respectively.
Once again, the standard of performance across the 128-strong field was impressively high, with 19 of the top 20 competitors all plus handicap players.
In the handicap section, Stirling’s Mike Hall (5) triumphed with net rounds of 69 and 68. Forrester Park’s Steve Jamieson finished on the same aggregate score but was three shots adrift of Hall in the second round.

Super Seniors Summer Meeting: June 1, 2
Scottish internationalist John Fraser won the Super Seniors Summer Meeting at Boat of Garten with rounds of 68 and 73 for a one over par total of 141.
The Royal Burgess stalwart triumphed by virtue of a better second round than first round leader George Barrie, Glenbervie, who opened his account with a magnificent five-under par 65.
Barrie couldn’t replicate his first round performance on Day 2, slipping to 76, while Fraser did just enough to claim the Gold Medal.
Both Fraser and Barrie were among the early starters and had the advantage of favourable weather conditions, especially in the second round. Later starters had to battle heavy rain as well as some tricky pin positions.
Gordon Meikle, Ladybank, finished third with rounds of 71 and 74.
In the handicap section, Willie Skene (11), Winterfield, turned in two nett rounds of 67 to take the honours. Murray Ferguson (6), Royal Burgess, was runner-up three shots adrift on 137, although he had the best gross score of Day 2 with 71. George Barrie (1) was third, two shots further back.

East of Scotland Open: May 18, 19
HENDERSON COMPLETES THE ‘GRAND SLAM’ WITH FINAL GREEN BIRDIE PUTT
Scottish internationalist Stewart Henderson became only the second player in SSGS history to complete the ‘grand slam’ of tournament triumphs with a sensational win in the East of Scotland Championship at Leven Links.
A single shot separated Henderson and Scotland team-mate Paul Moultrie to secure victory for the former and a place in the annals of senior amateur golf.
The only other player to win all nine of the tour’s principal tournaments is former Scotland team captain Ronnie Clark.
Henderson followed a one-under par 70 in the opening round at Leven with a two-under par 69 in the second, compared with Moultrie’s 71,69.
A long, raking birdie putt on the 18th green gave the Hamilton player victory by the narrowest of margins.
Both Henderson and Clark have won the Scottish Seniors Matchplay Championship, the Spring Meeting, the North of Scotland Championship, the President’s Cup, the East of Scotland Championship, the Central Scotland Championship, the West of Scotland Championship, the South of Scotland Championship and the Autumn Meeting.
Henderson has now won 14 SSGS tournaments overall compared with Clark’s 16.
Henderson was delighted to have finally won the East of Scotland crown.
He said: ‘It was the one tournament missing from the set so I am chuffed to have got this one over the line and to have a complete slam of SSGS events.’
Henderson’s second round was the model of consistency with nine straight pars on the outward half and three birdies and only one bogey on the inward.
Moultrie’s second round front nine mirrored Henderson’s back nine with three birdies and one bogey, while his inward half comprised nine straight pars.
Keith Watt, Turnhouse, finished third with two rounds of 70, despite a triple bogey 8 on the par five 12th on Day Two,
First round leader Alan Anderson, Aberdour, slipped to a disappointing 76 after his opening round of 69.
As a measure of the quality among the 132-strong field, the top 14 finishers were all plus handicap players bar two, who were scratch and 1 handicap.
The top four players - Henderson, Moultrie, Watt and Royal Dornoch ‘s Allan Cameron completed the 36 holes in under par with the fifth placed Ronnie Clark, finishing level - hugely creditable performances by all especially since they faced challenging wind and rain conditions on the second day.
Round of the tournament was achieved by Braehead’s Paul Brookes with an impressive and unrivalled four under par 67 in the second round, comprising four birdies and 14 pars.
Moultrie (+1.3) had the consolation of finishing top of the nett competition on 140. Drumpellier’s Graham Rankin (0.7) claimed the runner-up spot with the same 140 total but had one more shot than Moultrie in the second round. George Barrie (1.6) finished third on 141 ahead of Strathaven’s Robert Scott (2.8) by dint of a better second round score.

Super Seniors Spring Meeting: May 4, 5
CRAWFORD PROVES TO BE A ‘RAE’ OF SPRING SUNSHINE TO WIN AT TULLIALLAN
Greenock’s Crawford Rae triumphed in the first Super Seniors event of the season with rounds of 69 and 74 at Tulliallan.
His combined total of 143 was enough to win the Spring Meeting by one stroke from Glenbervie’s George Barrie who followed his opening 71 with a 73.
John Fraser, Royal Burgess, who was lying second after a first round 70 carded a second round 75 to finish third in a field of 70 players.
Robin Cockburn (5), Gullane, won the handicap section with nett rounds of 68 and 67, three ahead of Brian Binghan (4), Royal Troon, and Barrie (2), both on 138.

An unmatched two-under par second round of 70 secured victory for Royal Troon’s Robert Jenkins at Kilmarnock Barassie in the opening 36-hole tournament of the year.
The Scottish internationalist improved his first round score by five shots to claim the Spring Meeting title by virtue only of a better second round score from Gullane’s Duncan Low who followed a one-under par 71 with 74.
In cool and breezy conditions, Jenkins shot an impressive three birdies and six pars on his second round outward nine to turn in 34. He bogeyed the par three 12th and the par four 15th, but a birdie at the closing hole brought him home in 36.
Low, meanwhile, turned in one-under with birdies at the second and par-5 seventh with his only blemish being a bogey at the par three 4th. Three putts at the 18th for an inward half of 38, three over par, cost him the title.
Joint first round leaders Scott Walker, Gullane, and local player Andrew Campbell couldn’t match their first rounds of 69, slipping to a disappointing 78 and 84 respectively.
Robert Smith, Nairn, finished third with two rounds of 73. His 146 total was also enough to finish runner-up in the nett medal, with John Wilkes, Haggs Castle, running out winner with rounds of 70 and 73
Wilson Bryson, Drumpellier, was third on countback from Ian Jeen, New Club St Andrews, with rounds of 72 and 74,
