It was good to get the season started with a successful event at Moray G C with a full field competing over the 2 days. Like many courses Moray G C has experienced some issues with the condition of the course in addition to the pipe work being undertaken by the Air Force base, but I'm sure everyone enjoyed getting our tour up and running and meeting up with friends again after 2 challenging years.

Congratulations to our Chairman, Ronnie Clark on winning our first 2022 event with rounds of 68,69, closely followed a shot back by Stewart Henderson and Bryan Innes on 138. In the Handicap Section, Alan White won on countback with a 139 total followed by George Paterson and Bryan Innes.

Best round of the event was Greg Mackie with a 4-under par 65 in round 2!

Thank you to everyone for supporting our first event and look forward to a successful season.

The winner of the 2022 Order of Merit was our Chairman  RONNIE CLARK (ERSKINE) with a final points total of 1,234. Ronnie had a very consistent season with wins in the Scottish Seniors Open, as well as our Spring Meeting at Moray and the Presidents Cup at Montrose. In second place was PAUL MOULTRIE (ROYAL TROON),  on 964, and JOHN MATHERS (HAGGS CASTLE) in 3rd place on 719.

The winner of the Handicap Order of Merit was GEORGE BARRIE (CALLANDER GOLF CLUB), with a points total of 433, narrowly pushing SCOTT MICHIE (KINROSS GOLF CLUB) into 2nd place on 415. 3rd place was taken by BRYAN INNES (MURCAR GOLF CLUB) on 325.

Congratulations to Ronnie and George on a successful season.

The Super Seniors Scratch Order of Merit winner for 2023 is  JOHN FRASER (ROYAL BURGESS GOLFING SOCIETY).  Well played throughout the season John.


The handicap OOM however went  down to the wire. Going into the last event It was still all to play for with KEITH BRUCE (EDZELL) leading JOHN FRASER by one point. However John Fraser emerged the victor at Ratho Park, taking both the Scratch and Handicap Super Senior Order of Merit awards. Keith Bruce finished 2nd with Keith Ross (Glasgow G C) in 3rd place.

The event was won by John Fraser (Royal Burgess GS) on 139 (66,73), with Richard Gray (Caprington GC) in 2nd place on 142 (72,70), and Brian Smith (Glasgow GC) in third place on 144 (73,71).

In the Handicap Section, the winner was Richard Gray on 134 (68,66), with Brian Smith in 2nd place on 136 (69,67) and Bob Stewart (Tulliallan GC) in 3rd place on 139 (68,71).

Thank you to Ratho Park Golf Club for again hosting an SSGS Tour event which is very much appreciated.

After a successful inaugural match last year, the 2nd match took place at Fulford Golf Club, York on 5th & 6th September.

After the 5 fourballs on Saturday, SSGS led by 3.5 - 1.5. However, UKSGA won the matches today by 3-2 so SSGS retains the salver with the final result 5.5-4.5. A fuller report including match details will be updated later.  Pictured below is the successful SSGS team and Team Captain John Fraser accepting the Trophy from his UKSGA counterpart, Billy Mitchell.

3rd September 2022: SUPER SENIORS INTERNATIONAL MASTERS

A very successful tournament was held over 3 days at Southerness Golf Club on the Solway Coast between 31st August and 2nd September, and the Scottish weather even played ball with 3 days of glorious sunshine and light winds. As a result, the course was “fiery” and played tricky, even off the yellow tees.

At the end of the day, the competition couldn’t have ended closer, with 2 players tied on 212. The joint winners were new SSGS member GEORGE WRAITH (DURHAM CITY G C) and DOUGLAS CAMERON (WORTHING G C).  Current holder IAN BROTHERSTON (Dumfries & County G C) was 3rd on 216 and picked up the Bronze Medal.

In the handicap section, George also had the lowest Nett score, but as you are only allowed to win 1 prize, the Trophy and Gold Medal was won by ADRIAN DONKERSLEY (DENHAM G C) with a 3-round total of 208 (1 over par). Returning SSGS member BRIAN HALBERT (RATHO PARK G C) picked up the Silver Medal on 209 with a better last round, with the Bronze Medal being won by NORMAN CAMERON (PORTERS PARK G C) also on 209.

In the Age Categories, the following also picked up medals:

The course was presented in excellent condition and the clubhouse and pro shop staff looked after us well throughout the event. A big thank you to the Committee and members for hosting our event.

The event was won by Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon GC) with excellent rounds of 69,70 for a 139 total. In 2nd place was Ian Ross (Lenzie GC) with 72,70 for 142, and in 3rd with the better 2nd round was Richard Johnston (Glenbervie GC) with 70,73 for 143.

In the Handicap Section, the winner was Michael Wilson (Royal Aberdeen GC) with a net total of 140. In 2nd place was Robert Barnes (East Kilbride GC) on 142, and in 3rd place with the better 2nd round was Craig Stephen (Blairgowrie GC) on 143.

The course played hard and fast with tricky greens, reflected in the scoring over the 2 days.

Winner of the Sandy Pirie Trophy was Laurie Chancellor (Inverness Golf Club) with a 2-round scratch score of 141 (3 over par) with Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth G C) and John Fraser (Royal Burgess) tied for 2nd place on 145.  John had the lowest scratch score by a player aged 70 or over.

In the handicap results, Laurie also emerged with the lowest nett score of 139, with Bob Stewart (Tulliallan), Colin Halcrow (Largs) and Kenny Harrison (Moray) joint 2nd  2 shots back on 141.

In a close finish, the winner was George Robertson from the host club with rounds of 67,74 for 141. Closely followed in 2nd place on the better 2nd round by Stewart Henderson (Hamilton) on 143, and in 3rd place Alistair Belford (Prestwick St Nicholas) also on 143.

In the handicap section, the winner was Alistair Belford with a net 141, followed in 2nd place on the better 2nd round by Andrew Campbell (Murcar) on 142, and in 3rd place Scott Michie (Kinross) also on 142.

Stewart’s total of 138 was 2 shots clear of Scott Michie (Kinross). Tied for 3rd place on 141 were John Fraser (Royal Burgess), George Barrie (Callander), Tom McLevy (Blairgowrie) and James Graham (Lochmaben).

Denis McQuade (Glenbervie) edged out Scott Michie by way of countback for the best net score on 136.  Stewart Henderson and Keith Ross (Beith G C) were tied 3rd on 138.

The course was presented in excellent conditions, although the speedy tricky greens posed a stiff test.

John Mathers (Haggs Castle) Wins Match Play.  Ricky Gray (Caprington) Wins Super Seniors Match Play.

JOHN MATHERS  wins Matchplay.

In a battle of the John's. John Mathers overcame John Fraser (Royal Burgess Golf Society) in a closely fought final at Strathmore, winning at the 1st extra hole. The match was keenly contested throughout and both players produced golf of a high standard. John is pictured below accepting the trophy from Society President George Rodaks.


In the Super Seniors final, which also went to 1st extra hole, Ricky Gray fought back to defeat current holder  George Rodaks (Dunfermline Pitreavie) . Ricky is pictured below receiving the trophy from George (we know how to rub salt in the wounds George).

Congratulations to both winners and commiserations to John Fraser and George.

Strathmore was in excellent condition for the week, and our thanks go to all the staff at the Centre for making us most welcome, as well as a thank you to all the players who participated in the week.

Stirling G C was presented in excellent condition for our Central Scotland Open, which was played over 2 days of fine sunny weather,although a challenging breeze was in evidence.

At the end of 2 days John Mathers (Haggs Castle G C) emerged the winner with a 2 round total of 2 under par 142. In joint 2nd place on 144 were Maurice Lindsay (Grange & Broughty G C) and Gordon Grimmer (Nigg Bay G C).

In the handicap section, local player, and Committee member, Alex Hogg (Stirling G C) had a comfortable win by 7 shots with a 2 round total of 135, 9 under par. In joint 2nd place on 142 were George Johnston (Dalmahoy G C) and Steve Jamieson (Forrester Park G C).

In the Super Seniors, the gross winner was Laurie Chancellor (Inverness G C) on 145, with David Imrie (Lundin G C) in 2nd place on 148 and William Irvine (Lanark G C) 3rd on 151.

Alex Hogg also won the Super Seniors Handicap section, with William Irvine and Laurie Chancellor tied in 2nd place.

SSGS TOUR 2022 - PRESIDENT'S CUP, MONTROSE GC, MAY 19th/20th 2022

This year's event was held at Montrose GC last week in sunny, cool and windy conditions.  The course was presented in good condition and the clubhouse staff looked after us with great food. All players were very positive about the venue.

On completion of both rounds, 3 players jumped  ahead of the field with Ronnie Clark, Erskine GC, winning the President's Cup with rounds of 72, 71 for a 143 total. Paul Moultrie, Royal Troon GC, was a shot back on 144, with Keith Reilly, Silverknowes GC, in 3rd on 145.

In the handicap section, Keith Reilly led the way with a net total of 143, with William MacLeman, Moray GC, in 2nd place on 145 with the better 2nd round from Jim Devaney, Clydebank & District GC, in 3rd place.

The Vice-Presidents Cup is also awarded for the lowest gross core by a Super Senior player and this was won by Ian Brotherston (Dumfries & County), with scores of 73  & 78 for a total 151.

On the Thursday evening players joined Ronnie Clark, our Chairman and Ian Johnston, our Secretary, in the clubhouse for the presentation of prizes for the 2021 Tour. Stewart Henderson, Hamilton GC, who topped our 2021 Order of Merit, thanked everyone involved in running the SSGS Tour, congratulated all the other winners and looked forward to the rest of the 2022 Tour.

All trophies are now at the engravers and should be available to return to trophy winners from the Central Open  at Stirling GC on June 22nd/23rd. 2021 Medals will also be distributed.

Congratulations to Ronnie Clark on winning the President's Cup, Ian on winning teh Vice-Presidents Cup and to all vouchers winners!

The Super Seniors Spring Meeting, the first of the season, was held at Tulliallan Golf Club on Wednesday & Thursday this week. The course was in excellent condition and all 53 players enjoyed the experience, but judging by the scores, some more than others.

After the 2 rounds, LINDSAY BLAIR (Grangemouth G C) emerged the winner of the scratch competition with an excellent 2 round total of 142 (73 & 69) pipping John Fraser (Royal Burgess G C) by 3 shots. Jim McArthur (Crail Golfing Society) was in 3rd place a further 6 shots back.

In the handicap event, the same pairing took 1st and 2nd places with net scores of 142 and 145 respectively.  There were 3 players who finished on 145, but John’s better last round edged out  Keith McAllister (Northumberland Golf Club), with Keith Ross (Glasgow Golf Club) taking 4th slot due to Keith’s better inward half.

We held another successful series of 18 hole stableford events in March & April, only losing 1 event at Stirling due to the weather.  111 members played in at least 1event, and we hope you all enjoyed the events.

Full results for each event, as well as final Order of Merit positions, and list of voucher winners see the Winter Events page under Competitions tab.

The winner of the OOM where the best 2 from 4 events were counted, was Ewan Robertson (Stirling Golf Club) with Kenny Harrison (Moray Golf Club) in 2nd place and Gordon Grimmer (Nigg Bay Golf Club) in 3rd spot.

We will be looking to hold again next year, and will try and expand the number of events.

RENFREWSHIRE  (on their 1st appearance in the event) win the Seniors Area Team Championships at Glasgow Gailes with a combined score of 365. Perth & Kinross were in 2nd place on 371with Fife 3rd on 375.

Kenny Fairbrother returned best individual score with a 1 under par 70, with Ronnie Clark and George Barrie (Stirlingshire) a shot back in tied 2nd place.

It is with sadness i have to report the death of another member, Brian Grieve who passed away on 23rd January.

Brian played county golf for Perthshire and played in the first SSGS event at Stirling G.C.  Brian was rewarded for his finegolf by gaining international honours for Senior Scotland, and was a member of the 6-man 2006 European Team that won the Gold Medal at the European Team Championships at Ruuhikoski G.C. Finland.   Brian was also a member of the 7-man team that won the 2006 Senior Home Internationals at Dunbar G.C. Brian supported the SSGS events for many years and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his family.”

Keith's funeral will be on Tuesday 2nd Feb at 12:00 noon.Whilst the numbers are limited due to Covid restrictions, members may be able to view proceedings via Webcast.

The family are also having a funeral collection for Keith.. They'd really appreciate anyone that would like to spare a couple of pounds. Ardgowan Hospice went way above and beyond the call of their duty to help Keith have the most comfortable final few months possible.


It is with sadness that I need to report the death, following a short illness,  of Keith, Vice President and one of the founding members of the Society.  

As our president Gordon MacDonald puts it “Keith played a huge part in the organisation of the SSGS.  He constructed the first website for the Society, his drive and knowledge of competitive golf has contributed to the success of the SSGS”

He maintained a highly competitive standard of golf throughout his life, latterly playing, as we remember in Hacienda Del Alamo golf club in Spain, where he helped to organise several fantastic annual golfing trips for his pals from the Scottish Seniors Society.

The funeral will be private in line with current restrictions. Our thoughts go to his family and friends, of which there are many.

There are many legendary stories about Keith, who lived life to the full, but perhaps they are best summed up by these words from Gordon MacDonald.

“I have known Keith for the best part of 50 years playing for our counties in the West league. He was a very good golfer, and he also enjoyed the friendship and the hospitality that golf brings.

I will always  remember the weekend Keith and Barclay Howard were staying with Heather and I in Callander for the Fiery Cross.  I awoke on Sunday morning to find them hitting balls from my front lawn over the main road into the Farmers field,  never a dull moment with Keith.

I have many unforgettable  memories with Keith, I just know the golfing world above is going to be a happier place.  My thoughts are with his family, he will be sadly missed”

Jim & Peter Kinloch have commented,

"We are very saddened to hear of the passing of our friend and fellow Vice President and send our sincere condolences to his family. He will be sadly missed in the Society as he was one of the founder members and with Gordon MacDonald and ourselves was instrumental in getting the Society off the ground.

We have known Keith since Boys Golf days and played with him many times over the years. Jim and Keith played together in the Russell Cup at Fereneze one year and were on the last green when Peter’s ball came bouncing down the hill all over the place before falling into the hole."

Keith was an excellent golfer starting from a young age from being a member of West Kilbride Golf Club since a boy.  He was well known and liked by many, making good friends over the years, not just locally, but all over the world.  For a number of years he took a great interest in junior golfers both at Largs and West Kilbride.  

He maintained a highly competitive standard of golf throughout his life, latterly playing, as we remember in Hacienda Del Alamo golf club in Spain, where he helped to organise a number of fantastic annual golfing trips for his pals from the Scottish Seniors Society.

I will always remember Keith for his kindness, helpfulness, fun and companionship.  I am sure many of us can recall having some great sociable evenings with him, usually involving a drink or two and always for sure, a laugh.  

It was a shock today to hear of Keith’s passing, after a short illness, although comforting to know that he was with family and it was peaceful.

Perhaps it is fitting on the anniversary of Robert Burns,  to quote something I think attributed to him, even if it’s not, it is very apt,

“If there is another world, he lives in bliss. If there is none, he made the best of this.”

I am very sorry to hear of Keith's passing yesterday with him being a founder member of the original ssgs committee (secretary)we as members have a lot to thank him for.

He was a big character and a great man to get into his company .

I was very fortunate to enjoy our many trips to Spain with him ,one of my best memories of him was he reversed his golf cart into a water hazard at La Torre ,up to his neck and he couldn't swim .

What a man and thanks for helping to give us old boys a golfing future

We are once again running a series of 1 day, 18-hole Stableford events (Non-Qualifying) with 2 events in October 2020 and 4 events late Feb and March 2021. The format will be as previous years, with the Winter Order of Merit being won by the player with the highest aggregate points scored from 4 out of 6 competitions. Handicap allowance will be 3/4.

Stewart McKendrick (Dunkeld) wins at leven with a total 141, winning by 1 from local player Derek Paton (Dunnikier Park).

In handicap section Rennie Spence (Newtonmore) had a 2 shot winning margin over Eric Lindsay (Blairgowrie) on 138.

In super seniors section, Rennie also topped both lists with 148 gross total (138 Nett). In the gross Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) was 2nd on 152 due to a better last round from Ian Gourlay (Strathaven). In Handicap, Ian McKerron (Balmore) was second with a total of 143.

28th Sept: Glasgow Gailes

On a damp but not too windy day at Gailes, 99 players enjoyed an excellent course in great condition. Scoring was good, with the par 71 course, SSS 72 playing tough, resulting in a CSS of 73.

Sharing top slot with 2 under par  69's were last week's winner Ronnie Clark (Erskine), and Richard Johnston (Glenbervie), with Richard emerging top due to a better inward half. Andrew Stracey (Denholm) and George Crawford (Williamwood) shared 3rd slot on 70.

In Handicap section, George Crawford emerged the winner with a Nett 68, 1 ahead of Graham Dalzell (Airdrie), Jim Burns (Stranraer) and David Campbell (Ratho Park). Graham took 2nd place and Jim 3rd on countback.

In Super Senior section, Andrew Stracey emerged top in both Gross and Nett tables.

Erskine: Home favourite Ronnie Clark (Erskine) had a blistering last round 64 (7 under par) to win the West of Scotland Open with a total of 137, 7 shots ahead of Derek Paton (Dunniker Park) in second place. In 3rd place, a shot further back were Stuart Mckendrick (Dunkeld & Birnam)  and Nicky Gold (Bonnyton).

Ronnie also topped the Nett table on 141, 3 ahead of Gordon Scott (Cawder) in 2nd, with Stewart McKendrick and new member William McGuckin (Glenbervie) on 145.

Super Seniors Scratch was won by 72 year old Godon Brown (Dumbarton) on 151, with Glyn Rees (Fleetwood) 2nd on 154. In handicap section Glyn captured top slot on 146 with Gordon 2nd on 147

CSS Round 1 was 74.  CSS Round 2 was 73

th Sept: On a windy day at Forfar, there was a 3 way tie for Scratch result, with Gordon Grimmer, Ronnie Clark and Lindsay Gordon all recording excellent score of 70, 1 over par but 2 under the CSS of 72. On countback, Lindsay emerged winner, with Ronnie 2nd and Gordon 3rd.

In handicap section, Lindsay's net 67 was 1 shot better than Bob Stewart, with Joe McManus and Godon Grimmer a further shot back in joint 3rd.

In Super seniors, Lindsay Gordon emerged top of both Scratch and Handicap results.

The problem with reporting results from Strathmore has been sorted by Scottish Golf and Club Systems. Strathmore results have been transferred to your home clubs. If you advise your home club previoulsy of results, check they haven't been duplicated.

20th August: There seems to be a problem within Club Systems regarding your away scores being updated to home clubs, and then CDH. We have asked Club Systems to investigate. There is nothing more we can do so please do not contact us to enquire. we will update as soon as we hear anything.

Richard Johnston, (Glenbervie) wins at Strathmore by 1 shot on 140, from Niall Lamond, (Balmore). Richards final round of 65, 7 under par saw him edge home. Niall's consolation was he topped the Nett standings on 137, winning by 2 from George Barrie (Callander). Full results are below.

Mention also for John Russell, who had his first ever hole in one today at the 13th hole. Welldone John.

In the Super Seniors section, there was a 3 way tie at the top of the scratch competition with Bill Barclay, John Fraser and Keith Bruce all recording totals of 151. In the handicap section, Denis McQuade came out on top with Nett total 141, 2 ahead of Brian Kidd and Bill Barclay.

CSS for round 1 was 72, and for round 2, 71



6th August: Our events will now be qualifying for handicap purposes, following update today from Scottish Golf. Strict conditions will require to be complied with and details will be issued to entrants along with draws.

We are permitted now to hold our events but only as NON-QUALIFYING for handicaps, to comply with Government criteria. We can still enjoy competitive golf playing for vouchers. Full details updated on undenoted document, and email sent to all members today.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

31 July Update: Forfar has been confirmed and Lundin Links has been replaced by Leven Golf Links, on same dates. Document has been updated. We are awaiting final confirmation from Scottish Golf and Government that we can go ahead, albeit may not be qualifying for handicap purposes. We will confirm and update to members in next few days.

SSGS MINI TOUR 2020

Following on from members suggesting we run some events due to the improving pandemic situation, we asked for member feedback and received a positive response.

We have therefore organised 5 events to take place during late August, September, and early October.

This is of course subject to our previously laid out criteria for competitive golf being met at each individual venue, and Scottish Golf permission to run “Open events”. Currently Open Competitions are not allowed, and we have no confirmation that approval will be granted in time for our first, or subsequent events.

Some of our members will have prize vouchers past their expiry dates which you have been unable to spend due to the current shutdown. With non-essential retailers due to open soon, this email is your confirmation for pro shops and golf retailers that all vouchers will be paid even if the expiry date has passed.

5th May 2020 -- SSGS 2020 SEASON CANCELLED

Committee Decision Paper

Please open the above Document which provides details and rationale behind the Committee decision to reluctantly cancel ALL SSGS events this year. This has not been an easy decision and we are sure that members will appreciate that the health and safety of our members and volunteers must take precedent.

A fully detailed email will be issued to all members in the next few days.


24th April: As you are aware we've had to cancel all events to date due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Whilst no decision has yet been made as regards June's events, they must be considered doubtful at this moment in time, although we always live in hope.

One of the consequences of the cancellations is that many members are in credit, and these amounts may increase as the year progresses. Our preferred method of dealing with these cancelled entry fees, would be to carry them forward into the future for members' use, either this or next year.

If however you would prefer to have a refund sent now for these entry fees then please contact Ian Kerr direct on comps@scottishseniorsgolf.com. I'm sure you can appreciate that due to member confidentiality we cannot detail all the amounts due on this email,

As regards future tournaments, decisions will be made on a rolling basis,1 month before each event, taking into account Government guidelines, availability of accommodation in local area etc.


9th April: Given that current social distancing restrictions are likely to remain in force for next week or so, and that any relaxation will likely be on a gradual basis, we have decided to cancel the North of Scotland Open at Duff House Royal and the Presidents Cup at Ladybank. Both these events were scheduled for May.

Going forward we will review June's events early next month, but at this stage they must be classed as doubtful.

We appreciate that this will be a disappointment to our members, but we have a duty of care to you all (with many falling into the higher risk category re age) as well as our administrators.



3rd April: A decision about the events scheduled in May 2020 will be undertaken by the Committee following on from any revised Government guidelines after the end of the current lockdown period on 17th April. Future updates will be posted on website, facebook and will be emailed out to members as soon as decisions reached. Hope all members are managing to stay safe at this time.

17th March 2020: Considering the current Government guidelines and with the health and safety of our members and administrators being paramount, the Committee have decided on the following course of action, with immediate effect:

The Super Seniors International Masters at Scotscraig Golf Club scheduled for 15-17th April has been cancelled, as has the pre competition reception on the 14th. All entrants have been advised. Entry fees will be refunded or held in credit for future events.
The Spring meeting at Dunblane on 23/24th April has been cancelled. All entry monies paid will be held in credit for future SSGS events, either in 2020 or 2021.
All other SSGS events due from 1st May onwards will be reviewed nearer the relevant competition date to determine if will proceed or not. These decisions will be made in enough time to allow for any accommodation and travel arrangements to be changed as required.
Winter Stablefords are cancelled,
We understand that this will be a disappointment to many of you, but given the current situation, and considering the age profile of our Society, we feel that this is the correct course of action.

The Inaugural 54-hole Scottish Senior International Masters for senior golfers aged 65 and over will take place from 1st to 3rd September on the prestigious Gullane No. 2 course on the East Lothian coastline.
This is the first 54-hole senior event for the 65 and over age group in the UK, and the entry fee of £80 includes the 3 rounds of the championship and a practice round. There is no cut after 2 rounds so everyone plays the full 3 rounds of the  championship.
Hopefully the event can take place as planned, however, should there be any Government restrictions due to the pandemic that would impact the event, all competitors would be advised as soon as possible.

Stewart Henderson (Hamilton) is the new SSGS Matchplay Champion after overcoming holder Ronnie Clark (Erskine) 3&2 in this afternoon's final. A fuller report will be updated later.

12th July: In this mornings semi finals, 2 close matches were played out. Defending champion Ronnie Clark defeated Norman Dyce by 1 hole, and the same margin emerged in the 2nd match, with Stewart Henderson emerging winner against Paul Moultrie.

DENIS McQUADE WINS SUPER SENIORS MATCH-PLAY. Denis overcame defending champion George Rodaks this morning in a keenly contested final. The match was close all the way with Denis taking a 1 hole lead into the 18th. He held his nerve to win th ehole and the match, 2 Up. Well played and congratulations to Denis, and hard luck George.

11th July: in this morning's 2nd round, top seed Ronnie Clark progressed to the 1/4 finals with a 4&3 win over Alan White. 2nd seed Ian Brotherston exited the competition after losing to Greg mackie by 2&1. Other winners were Roy Lumsden, Norman Dyce, Phil Dempsey, Richard Johnston, Paul Moultrie and Stewart Henderson.

In the afternoon Quarter Finals, Ronnie defeated Roy 4&3, Norman edged out Phil by 2 holes, Richard overcame Greg 4&3 and Stewart Henderson continued to have a run of close matches, getting th ebetter of Paul by 1 hole.

Semi-finals tomorrow morning are Ronnie v Norman and Richard v Stewart.

In the Super Seniors, after today's semi-final, Denis Mcquade and curent holder George Rodaks will contest the final tomorrow after defeating David Nelson and Alex Hogg respectively.

Quarter finals scores will be updated later.


10th July: Top seeds Ronnie Clark and Ian Brotherston progress to 2nd round, although in tight matches Ronnie was taken to 20th hole by David Hart. All other scores have been updated and can be viewed on link below.

Handicap winner was Jim Emslie (Royal Aberdeen) with a net total of 140, the same score as Neish Chisholm (Kemnay), however Jim takes Bronze Medal due to better last round.

President’s Cup at Blairgowrie

A field of 127 players met at Blairgowrie to contest the inaugural President’s Cup.  This is a new addition to the fixture list, thanks to the generosity of Society President, Gordon MacDonald, who has donated a trophy to be played for annually. At the same time the Super Seniors (Players aged 65 and over) were playing for the Vice President’s Cup, donated by our Honorary Members, Jim & Peter Kinloch.

The first round was played over the Rosemount course.  There was a slight breeze and some tricky pin placings made scoring difficult, but as always, some players rose to the challenge.  Ian Brotherston (Dumfries & County) and Derek Paton (Dunnikier Park) shared the lead after the first round with excellent scores of 69 (3 under par).  Ian had a very steady round with 15 pars and 3 birdies.  Derek’s round was rather different – he bogeyed the 2nd and 6th but birdied the 7th and 8th to reach the turn in level par.  Although he bogeyed the 13th and 16th on the back nine, the damage was more than repaired with a birdie at the 12th and eagles at two par 5’s – the 11th and 14th.

The second round was played over the Lansdowne course in sunny but breezy conditions.  Ian Brotherston came out on top, adding a 75 to his opening 69 for a total of 144, thereby becoming the first winner of the Presidents Cup.  Joint overnight leader, Derek Paton scored 76 for a total of 145 and finished joint second along with Richard Moffat (Turnhouse) (74,71) and David Logie (Craigie Hill) (72, 73).

The Vice President’s Cup for Super Seniors was won by Keith Bruce (Edzell), who’s gross total of 146 gave him a winning margin of 8 shots from John Fraser (Royal Burgess), with Billy Erskine (Kilsyth Lennox) in 3rd place, a further shot back.

The bronze medal for leading handicap score was won by Jim Emslie (Royal Aberdeen) (4) with rounds of 72 and 68 for a total of 140.  Neish Chisholm (Kemnay) (14) also had a total of 140 (68, 72), but Jim wins the bronze medal by virtue of a better second round.

Paul Moultrie wins the opening event of the 2019 OOM season, with a level par total of 142. In second place was Maurice Lindsay (The Grange G C) one shot adrift on 143, with Niall Lamond (Tantallan) and Richard Johnston (Glebervie) tied equal 3rd on 145.

In the handicap section, ex-pat Ken Thomson (Bramhall Park) had an excellent 2 round total of 139 Nett, 3 under par, with Niall Lamond and Alan Harrington (Western Gailes) tied for 2nd on 141.

Play over the 2 days was challenging, with the weather breaking from the recent good spell. On Thursday, we were faced with high winds throughout the day and the later players had to contend with heavy rain, thunder and lightning. Play had to be suspend for 30 mins in the afternoon for player safety. On Friday the wind had changed direction slightly and intensified. The early starts had the best of the day getting around in the dry, before the heavens opened and heavy rain persisted for the afternoon. Scoring was excellent in view of the conditions.

CSS for round 1 was 72, and for Round 2 74. (Par and SSS for Powfoot is 71).

Super Seniors match v UK Senior Golf Association.

2021 will see an inaugural Super Seniors match against the UK Seniors Golf Association.

Full details on selection criteria etc, will be published early next year, prior to season commencing.


The event, to be held at Royal Burgess G C (Edinburgh) is scheduled for Monday/Tuesday 6th &  7th September 2021. Each team will comprise 10 players.

Sunday, 5th Sept     Practice round.

Our Eighth Annual Dinner will be held at Stirling Golf Club on Friday1st March 2019 at 6.30pm for 7pm prompt start. The Dinner will include the annual presentation of prizes and wives and partners are most welcome to attend.

Numbers are limited to 90 guests with places available on a first come, first served basis. The dress code is jacket collar and tie for gents and at the lady’s discretion. Our first guest speaker/raconteur is our own SSGS member Mr Jim McArthur and he will be followed by the Main Speaker Mr Sandy Jones the former chief executive of the PGA who has had a fascinating career in golf worldwide and the SSGS is delighted to welcome him to our dinner.

Tickets are £30.00 per person. Demand is expected to be high so please contact Alex Hogg at thehoggfamily@btinternet.com  with your reservations.

GRAHAM BELL WINS SCOTTISH SENIORS MEN’S OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

SSGS member Graham Bell (Downfield GC) won the Scottish Seniors Men’s Championship at   Royal Burgess by 3 shots with a two under par total of 211.

SSGS member Graham Bell (Downfield GC) won the Scottish Seniors Men’s Championship at   Royal Burgess by 3 shots with a two under par total of 211.

In round 1, Graham did not get off to the best of starts, hitting  opening tee shot out of bounds and ending up with a double bogey 6.  He then bogeyed the 3rd to go three over par, but being the gritty competitor that he is, covered the next 15 holes in 8 under par to score 66. Graham led by 2 shots after the first round and held his lead throughout the three rounds of the tournament.  The lead was down to one shot with 9 holes to play, but Graham again showed his class by coming home in 2 under par to win by 3 shots.

Robert Smith (Nairn) finished in a tie for 6th place, while Ian Dickson (Gullane) and Tom McLevy (Blairgowrie) tied for 10th spot.

John Fraser (Royal Burgess Golfing Society) won the over 65 award.
