With almost 4% of UK adults leaving an inheritance tax bill for their loved ones after passing away, careful estate planning is something we can all consider to protect our nearest and dearest when the time comes.

Of particular value to homeowners, business owners and those in possession of assets such as bank savings, investments, pensions and second homes, proactive estate planning allows you to capitalise on the allowances available. It can also prevent an unexpected shock while your family are grieving, as many families liable to pay inheritance tax never expect to find themselves in such a position.

In the UK, the Nil Rate for inheritance tax applies to the first £325,000 of the deceased’s estate. Leaving your home to a child or grandchild can add up to £175,000 to that Nil Rate, meaning that an individual person may pass on an estate valued at up to £500,000 before it is liable for inheritance tax. Should an estate exceed the Nil Rate Band, the portion of the estate which exceeds it will be taxed at 40%. These thresholds were set out in the 2021 Finance Bill and are fixed until April 2026.

Inheritance tax receipts are now at a record high, with HMRC reporting £6.1 billion collected in tax year 2021/22 – an increase of 14% on the previous year. The freezing of the Nil Rate Band and long-term asset growth among older generations, particularly those who have benefited from growth in house prices, have exposed more estates to inheritance tax liability.

With complex rules in place governing the gifting of money and assets to loved ones up to seven years before death, the transfer of allowances between spouses and civil partners, the use of protected trusts and tax relief on certain donations to charities and registered clubs, professional advice is crucial.

As one of Scotland’s foremost Independent Financial Advisers, McCrea Financial Services offer estate planning services which integrate with your overall financial goals and circumstances. Drawing on their award-winning expertise in pensions and retirement planning, they can help you manage your estate in a way which allows you to live the life you want to live now while protecting your loved ones in the future.

Graphical user interface, website Description automatically generatedTheir friendly team are happy to answer any questions you might have about whether estate planning is right for you.

Oct 2022: Message from our main sponsors - McCrea Financial Services.

As one of Scotland’s foremost Independent Financial Advisers, we at McCrea know that careful retirement planning is one of the most rewarding contributions you can make to your quality of life.

For many of us, our home is the most valuable asset we own. Recent research has shown that homeowners are tapping into that value to transform their retirement – with some boosting their retirement savings by up to 181%.

Lifetime mortgages are the most popular form of equity release, where homeowners borrow against the value of their property. They allow homeowners aged 55 or over who own a property in the UK worth at least £70,000 to access the value tied up in their home while remaining able to live there with 100% ownership.

The average equity released through a lifetime mortgage is now £115,511. For those approaching retirement, or for those who have already retired, this sum can be the difference between a frugal and a more fulfilling retirement.

Other homeowners opt for lifetime mortgages in order to free up funds for family school and university fees, home improvements or private medical treatments, while others direct the funds towards pensions and investments.

Before deciding to go ahead with a lifetime mortgage, or any other form of equity release, it’s compulsory to obtain expert advice. As a fully independent firm, McCrea has a team of advisers ready to assess your personal financial circumstances.

We are not tied to any providers and pride ourselves on taking a holistic view of your finances to determine the best solution. We can work with you to make clear the impact equity release would have on any means tested benefits such as Pension Credits and set out what a lifetime mortgage means for your ability to leave a legacy for your family after you’ve gone.

We now spend around double the length of time in retirement as our grandparents were able to enjoy, and a lifetime mortgage may just be something that transforms your retirement for the better.

Why not tee up a free, no-obligation chat with a member of our team to explore if a Lifetime Mortgage would be right for you? He was a very good golfer, and he also enjoyed the friendship and the hospitality that golf brings.

I will always remember the weekend Keith and Barclay Howard were staying with Heather and I in Callander for the Fiery Cross. I awoke on Sunday morning to find them hitting balls from my front lawn over the main road into the Farmers field, never a dull moment with Keith.

I have many unforgettable memories with Keith, I just know the golfing world above is going to be a happier place. My thoughts are with his family, he will be sadly missed”

Jim & Peter Kinloch have commented,

"We are very saddened to hear of the passing of our friend and fellow Vice President and send our sincere condolences to his family. He will be sadly missed in the Society as he was one of the founder members and with Gordon MacDonald and ourselves was instrumental in getting the Society off the ground.

We have known Keith since Boys Golf days and played with him many times over the years. Jim and Keith played together in the Russell Cup at Fereneze one year and were on the last green when Peter’s ball came bouncing down the hill all over the place before falling into the hole."

From Alan Harrington:

Keith was an excellent golfer starting from a young age from being a member of West Kilbride Golf Club since a boy. He was well known and liked by many, making good friends over the years, not just locally, but all over the world. For a number of years he took a great interest in junior golfers both at Largs and West Kilbride.

He maintained a highly competitive standard of golf throughout his life, latterly playing, as we remember in Hacienda Del Alamo golf club in Spain, where he helped to organise a number of fantastic annual golfing trips for his pals from the Scottish Seniors Society.

I will always remember Keith for his kindness, helpfulness, fun and companionship. I am sure many of us can recall having some great sociable evenings with him, usually involving a drink or two and always for sure, a laugh.

It was a shock today to hear of Keith’s passing, after a short illness, although comforting to know that he was with family and it was peaceful.

Perhaps it is fitting on the anniversary of Robert Burns, to quote something I think attributed to him, even if it’s not, it is very apt,

“If there is another world, he lives in bliss. If there is none, he made the best of this.”

Ian Brotherston recalls

I am very sorry to hear of Keith's passing yesterday with him being a founder member of the original ssgs committee (secretary)we as members have a lot to thank him for.

He was a big character and a great man to get into his company .

I was very fortunate to enjoy our many trips to Spain with him ,one of my best memories of him was he reversed his golf cart into a water hazard at La Torre ,up to his neck and he couldn't swim .

What a man and thanks for helping to give us old boys a golfing future

Hope all members are managing to stay safe at this time.

17th March 2020: Considering the current Government guidelines and with the health and safety of our members and administrators being paramount, the Committee have decided on the following course of action, with immediate effect:

The Super Seniors International Masters at Scotscraig Golf Club scheduled for 15-17th April has been cancelled, as has the pre competition reception on the 14th. All entrants have been advised. Entry fees will be refunded or held in credit for future events.

The Spring meeting at Dunblane on 23/24th April has been cancelled. All entry monies paid will be held in credit for future SSGS events, either in 2020 or 2021.

All other SSGS events due from 1st May onwards will be reviewed nearer the relevant competition date to determine if will proceed or not. These decisions will be made in enough time to allow for any accommodation and travel arrangements to be changed as required.

Winter Stablefords are cancelled,

We understand that this will be a disappointment to many of you, but given the current situation, and considering the age profile of our Society, we feel that this is the correct course of action.

We will keep you informed of developments via website, Facebook and regular emails.

Keith Ross

Captain
